Planning out your home renovation is a process with a lot of moving parts and different vendors to work with. General Contractors have different ideas about when in the process your new floors should be installed. Building a team you’re comfortable with is a big deal, and your flooring vendor is just one of the considerations.
The Sooner the Better
The general rule of thumb is that the earlier, the better. To dive into the details, the truth is that communication is key. If you’re demolishing walls, your GC needs to work with your flooring contractor to make sure that the demolition is done so we can go in and get the flooring in without slowing down the whole project.
Making sure that each contractor is communicating with each other is how to best make sure your flooring estimate will be accurate and your home renovation keeps moving forward on schedule.
If you get your flooring vendor involved early in the process you get to make your final choices without feeling under pressure for delivery timelines. We always recommend looking at samples in your home. Looking at samples in our show room is a good way to narrow down the type of product you want, but seeing the specific samples in the space where they will be installed is a game changer.
Timing is Key
There are a lot of timing factors that go into a new floor installation. What type or types of flooring you choose impacts just about all of those factors! Some products will take longer to get in hand than others. The earlier we get involved in a renovation project the easier it is for us to make sure that your flooring can be obtained within the necessary time frame.
Some products, namely natural and engineered hardwoods, require time to acclimate. This means it will need to be allowed to exist inside the location where it will be installed for a period of time before the installation process can start. Each product has its own specifications that will need to be accounted for, but the average is 3 or 4 days. If you’re getting ready to start your renovation project, let’s talk! We would be happy to schedule a free estimate and get measurements taken for you.
