Getting new flooring in your home is exciting. It improves your space in both aesthetics and functionality and can completely change how you feel about a room. That being said, many homeowners are wary because it feels like a massive undertaking. The truth is, any time you jump into a home improvement project you should understand the process and what to expect is the best way to have a successful outcome. We feel it’s important for us as flooring experts that do this every day to share how the whole process works for people that haven’t done it (or at least haven’t done it nearly as often as we have). We’ve outlined the stages, and we’re always ready to go over the specifics of your project with you.
Getting the New Flooring Process Started
The very first stage is your vision for your home with new floors. Part of that is you deciding on your color palette and the overall aesthetic you’re want to achieve. You’ll also need to have an idea of what your budget will be.
The next step is choosing a professional to work with, like the experts here at Flohr. When you work with us we’ll set you up with a free estimate. This includes having a flooring professional come to your home to take detailed measurements, ensuring that the quote is accurate and you won’t be paying for too much (or even worse, not enough) material. We are also able to give advice on different products, how they hold up over the years, and what options there are that will best match your needs.
Now that we have the numbers to tell us how much flooring your home will need we can match that to your budget. We’ll narrow down the options within the type of flooring you’ve chosen for you considering the style and color variety. As you make your final choices we’ll take into consideration how long it will take to order (if we don’t have it in stock) and get the materials in hand. This will give you a projected start date, and we will give you the projected timeline for completion.
Getting To Work
There are some things that will need to happen before the first day of your flooring work. When materials are delivered they may need to be allowed to sit in place for a day or two – the best practice for each product is provided by the manufacturer. We’d recommend to do that before we start replacing your old floors so that we’re minimizing time we’ll be in your home.
Rooms will need to be cleared out so that existing flooring can be removed. If we’re replacing all the floors in your home some things can be shifted from room to room during the process. We’ve discovered that it’s rare with flooring companies, but we are more than happy to handle moving furniture around (and move it back of course once we’re done!) so that we can replace the floor.
As the subflooring is revealed it should be inspected to identify any areas that have issues to be addressed. This is also when we will level any uneven surfaces or apply moisture barriers if needed. Once the subflooring is ready to go, we are at installation!
Installing New Floors in Austin
When it’s time to install, you’ll start to see your vision taking shape right in front of you. What the exact installation process looks like will depend on the flooring you’ve chosen. Our professional installers are fast, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable about every type of flooring we install.
Once your flooring is installed completely the finishing touches are all that’s left. Baseboards, transitions, and molding are put in place before you do a final walkthrough to approve the job.
Before we leave a job we always make sure that you have all the materials from the manufacturer (you commonly want to keep a little extra in case you need repairs in a few years). Warranties and care instructions should be kept in a safe place so you can consult them when necessary. Hopefully this overview is helpful. When you’re ready to talk specifics and get your flooring renovation started we’re ready, give us a call.
