No, of course you don’t have to have just one type of flooring! There are plenty of reasons to mix it up. The biggest one is preference.
If you love the uniform look of one type of flooring, then you have the correct answer. Using different flooring to define different spaces is an option but not a requirement (though we’d recommend against putting wood flooring in bathrooms for obvious reasons. You can always get tile or vinyl floors that look like wood to keep the look). Your home should be what works best for you and what fits the style you want.
Think Form Plus Function
It probably goes without saying that we use different areas of our homes so differently. Having the most durable flooring in the highest traffic areas makes upkeep easier with less maintenance. Doorways are some of the most high traffic areas, and the most likely to be exposed to outdoor elements. Having tile entry points helps!
Bathrooms need surfaces that can tolerate high humidity, and more water in general. Even if you’re a household of careful adults your bathroom flooring will get wet more often than any other room. Tile in bathrooms provides the easiest maintenance.
Carpet in the Bedroom(s)
Wall to wall carpeting has somewhat fallen out of favor in the past few years. However, it has some great qualities. Using carpet in your bedrooms can help to create a quieter environment, and better sleep. If you have little ones a soft surface makes it easier to do nighttime check ins without waking them, always a good thing! Thick, plush carpeting is also a gentle way to put your feet on the floor first thing in the morning.
Having varied flooring including both hard and soft surfaces is a great way to create unique spaces within your home. If carpet isn’t your thing, we get that, but don’t feel like you have to rule it out just because you prefer wood or tile flooring in the rest of your home.Ready to look at some options?
