A big question and that is, unfortunately, without a one size fits all answer – ‘How long does it typically take to install new flooring?’. The amount of time to install new flooring is considerably less than the amount of time required for a flooring renovation. Unless we’re coming in to install flooring in a new build that is prepped and ready, the install time itself won’t give you the best idea of how long your project will take. The general range for a flooring renovation is between one and three weeks, but once we know more details about your project, we can narrow that down for you!
Factors to Consider
The biggest factor that impacts time is the square footage involved. A close second is the types of flooring involved – the kind being removed is just as important as the new flooring to be installed. For example, some flooring such as hardwood needs to acclimate before it can be installed. This means it will need to simply exist in your home for a few days up to a week depending on the specific product. Carpet or vinyl have the quickest installation time.
As far as existing floors, wall to wall carpeting is usually the quickest, and simplest, to remove as well. Plus, the least likely to leave damage underneath that will require repairs. By comparison removing tile requires more time, and more equipment. There is also a greater chance that either repairs or leveling will need to be done to the subfloor before the new one can be installed. While we can’t be certain how much additional prep will be needed until your existing floor is out, we can estimate based on our assessment and our experience.
Best Ways to Plan
Working with an experienced flooring contractor is the best way to get a good idea of how long to expect your renovation to take. How we do things: we will meet with you on site to evaluate the current flooring and determine what will be required during the demo phase. This is also the best way for us to get accurate measurements and identify any unique features. Perfectly square rooms aren’t common. Knowing your home’s layout and noting anything such as bay window areas that require a little extra time to address helps us give you the most accurate timeline estimate possible.
