What’s vinyl flooring?
Vinyl flooring is a synthetic floor that’s typically made of materials like plastic, fiberglass, or PVC. They come in planks, tiles or sheets that can then be assembled in your space. They have layers, with a core layer that makes up a bulk of the material. Then there’s an image layer which can mimic other materials like wood or stone and then a protective layer. That top layer protects the sublayers from various types of damage.
Pros of vinyl flooring
Resilient
Vinyl flooring is a pretty resilient type of flooring. It has high durability, is water-resistant and requires low amounts of maintenance. If the vinyl flooring has a wear layer it can survive the wear-and-tear of high traffic areas and some manufacturers offer 100% waterproof vinyl floors which can be used for bathrooms and/or mudrooms.
Affordable
Homeowners can expect to pay between $2 to $7 per square foot for vinyl plank flooring. Depending on the size of the space you are installing the vinyl floor in, you can expect to pay anywhere between $250 to $4,600 for installation. For comparison, the average installation cost for hardwood flooring is $4,200.
Comfortable
Compared to hardwood and stone flooring, vinyl plank flooring is “softer” underfoot and can feel more “padded.” This is because of the layered composition, which also helps insulate the flooring, allowing it to sustain temperature no matter the season.
Cons of vinyl flooring
Can’t be refinished
Vinyl plank flooring features the single protective layer over the design layer. As a result, if the floor is damaged, that area cannot be refinished. It will have to be removed and replaced by another plank. If enough of the floor is damaged, then the whole floor will have to be replaced.
Doesn’t add to resale value the same as natural wood
Vinyl floors aren’t seen as a positive or negative for most homebuyers – but new clean floors always help a home sell.
