First thing’s first: choosing the perfect flooring color for your space is entirely subjective – there is no right or wrong answer. You don’t need one type of flooring for your whole house nor do you need to take anyone else’s opinion as right or wrong. That being said, there are specific elements that are worth being considered as you choose the perfect flooring color for your space.
Look at Your Lighting
The reality is, when you’re picking your flooring – be it hardwood, tile, vinyl, carpet or any other option – you are choosing for color as well as quality and style. But, much like paint, the color shifts based on the lighting so that the flooring that looks dark in a northern facing room is twice as bright in the morning for a room that faces east.
Natural Lighting and Your Floor Color
As a general rule of thumb, natural lighting around sunrise and sunset is warmer (think yellows, reds, and oranges) and cooler during midday (more bluish). But that also depends on how your home is oriented, your windows/blinds, and your wall color(s).
Try to pay attention to how your rooms look in different parts of the day. It’s a good idea to take pictures of rooms (morning, noon, evening) to see how it changes and bring those when you’re going through the showroom picking flooring. And don’t be afraid to ask for samples to bring home to see how it looks in your home (much like painting a swatch on a wall before you paint the wall).
Artificial Lighting and Your Floor Color
While easier to change than natural lighting, artificial lighting has an equal impact on your flooring.
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) have a tendency to fade cooler flooring colors whereas incandescent and LED bulbs have multiple options depending if you’re going for a brighter cooler or softer warmer light. Newer LED bulbs are adjustable as well, so you can see what makes the floor pop the most and set it to automatically adjust throughout the day even.
