Whether you’re redesigning your home or building one from the foundation up, your stairs are a key part of any home project. As a central piece of the home’s structure, it’s important to consider all the different possibilities you have when it comes to your stair flooring. Not just aesthetic, but how it’s going to function with your needs.
Stair flooring considerations
Budget
Your options really depend on the kind of budget you want to work with. That budget can also let you know what types of materials would be best to explore. For example, hardwood may cost you between $100-$250 per stair whereas carpeting could cost between $55-$95 per stair.
Maintenance
Consider the amount of time you’re ready to spend on maintaining your floors. Laminate floors require less upkeep than hardwood floors would.
Noise and traffic
The location of the stairwell should also be a factor. If the stars are right next to a bedroom, you may want softer stairs to avoid hearing people move up and down constantly.
Safety
Everyone’s situation is different. A young family with small children running around may not want them running up and down wood stairs.
Aesthetic
The look of the stairs is just as important. The vibe of your home and furniture should give you an idea of how your stairs can help round out the visual language of the space.
Flooring ideas for stairs
Hardwood
Considered one of the more upscale flooring types, hardwood can make a staircase feel classy. It can also last as long as the house does. With relatively easy maintenance, variety of looks and durability, hardwood can be a great choice for a wide range of homes.
There are other aspects to consider, however. It can be slippery when wet and, if people aren’t careful, it can be very noisy. Cost-wise, it can range anywhere from $6-$12 per square foot for refurbishment, though this can depend on the type of hardwood you want.
Carpet
Like hardwood, carpeted stairs are very popular. They’re quieter than hardwood stairs and can offer you more traction when going up and down them. And like hardwood, carpet can give you a range of looks to complement
Carpet can trap dirt, stains and other odors, especially in households with pets and children. They also require a good bit of maintenance to keep clean, specifically vacuuming.
Decorative tile
Having decorative tile as a stair runner can help make your stairs stand out. Tile is easier to clean than carpet, as it doesn’t attract dirt or allergens like dust. And properly maintained decorative tiles can last up to 20 years or so.
Decorative tiles can be heavy, however, which means they can’t be used for all kinds of stairwells. If you’re interested in applying decorative tiles to your stairs, we recommend consulting with flooring experts, since the process can also be labor intensive. One thing we’ve done in the past that worked really well is doing wood stairs and then decorative tiles as the risers.
